Ribera's journey in photography began with a mentoring scholarship, which opened the doors to numerous solo exhibitions and participation in contemporary photography festivals, showcasing her growing prowess. Her transition from sculpture to photography infused her work with a new creative vitality.
In discussing her work, Ribera emphasizes her commitment to exploring and expressing the injustices and shared human experiences that shape our lives. "I strive to take the sensitivity, beauty, and also the pain that we all share, and through introspection and assimilation of how they impact us, transform them into images to communicate," she explains. Her workspace, a modest 2x1 table, becomes a stage where she constructs small scenarios using dolls and various scale objects to convey her ideas and emotions. The magic of photography then takes over, as she meticulously considers the angles, lighting, and perspectives to bring her scenes to life.
"I’m interested in the imprint that what we experience leaves on us. That subjectivity which, when captured, becomes even more universal than objective reality," says Ribera. Her work grapples with eternal questions: "Who are we? Where are we going? How do we relate? Loneliness and dignity. The way we treat the world and ourselves." This introspective approach is evident in her series, which explore complex themes with depth and sensitivity.
Photography entered Ribera’s life serendipitously, leading to an expansion of her creative universe. "Everything became achievable, and there are no limits beyond our imagination and the love that art unveils to us," she reflects. Despite using inanimate models, Ribera infuses them with life, communicating through them to convey her artistic vision. "When I set up a scene, I have to sense its vitality, where size becomes inconsequential, and it effectively conveys what I intend."
Mercè Ribera's work is a testament to the transformative power of artistic discovery. Through her innovative fusion of sculpture and photography, she offers viewers a profound exploration of light, form, and human experience. Her dedication to capturing the universal through the subjective, and her meticulous approach to creating and photographing scenarios, make her a distinctive and compelling voice in photography.
